Chapter 3: Understanding Ego and Motivation
Krishna continues by explaining how ego influences decisions. Ego here refers to the belief that we are the sole controllers of outcomes. Krishna reminds Arjuna that actions arise from many factors including nature, circumstance and individual tendencies.
When a person believes everything depends entirely on themselves, the mind becomes tense. When a person believes nothing depends on them, the mind becomes careless. Krishna guides Arjuna toward a balanced understanding. One must act sincerely while accepting that outcomes unfold according to many influences.
For young people, this teaching helps with academic and professional stress. A student may believe that one exam will define their entire future. A job seeker may feel that one interview decides their worth. Krishna helps shift the focus from exaggerated pressure to steady effort.
Ego can also appear as resistance to responsibility. When a person feels they are above certain tasks, their growth slows. Krishna encourages Arjuna to perform his role with humility and sincerity.
Chapter 3 encourages self awareness about motivation. When actions arise from responsibility rather than ego, they become steadier and more meaningful.
