Nowruz 2025: The Persian New Year Celebrated with Tradition and Joy
Nowruz (Nowruz 2025) is derived from two Persian words, Nav meaning new and Roj meaning day. The day of Nowruz marks the beginning of the Persian New Year and is celebrated in a very special manner.
Significance of Nowruz
In the Parsi community, Nowruz symbolizes the first day of spring and marks the end of winter. Every year, millions of people participate in the celebration of the Vernal Equinox, observing the festival with traditional customs and rituals. According to the Parsi calendar, the spring season will conclude on March 20, 2025, at 5:01 AM Eastern Time. Nowruz is primarily celebrated in countries like Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, and others.
How Nowruz is Celebrated
On the day of Parsi New Year, people wake up early, clean their homes, and decorate their houses, especially the main entrance. The Haft Sin table is also set up during this time. This table includes seven items, such as apples, mustard oil, water, yogurt, fennel, walnuts, a bowl of water, and goldfish. Each of these items holds a specific significance.
Following the setting up of the Haft Sin table, people wish for happiness, prosperity, and good health in the coming year. Traditional dishes are prepared and shared with friends and family. It is also customary to exchange gifts on this day.
The 13-Day Celebration
The Nowruz festival is not just about the first day; it lasts for 13 days. During this period, traditional games, music, and dance are performed, making the celebration even more special. People spend time with family and friends, exchanging well-wishes. The festival concludes on the 13th day with a celebration known as “Sizdah Bedar.” On this day, people go outdoors and spend time in nature. According to Parsi beliefs, this festival is a special occasion to experience the renewal of life.
