Who Is Maa Brahmacharini?
Maa Brahmacharini is the second manifestation of Goddess Durga. Her name is associated with penance, spiritual discipline and devotion. According to Hindu mythology, she performed severe penance to attain Lord Shiva as her husband.
The Goddess is depicted in a peaceful, radiant and divine form. She wears white clothes and holds a Japa Mala (prayer beads) in her right hand and a Kamandalu (water pot) in her left hand.
Her divine form inspires devotees to remain patient during difficult times, stay committed to their goals and practise self-discipline.
Maa Brahmacharini Katha
According to Hindu mythology, Maa Brahmacharini was born in the house of Himavan, the king of the mountains. Following the guidance of Sage Narada, she resolved to perform intense penance to attain Lord Shiva as her husband.
It is believed that the Goddess practised severe austerities for thousands of years. Initially, she survived on fruits and roots. Later, she sustained herself only on Bilva leaves that had fallen from trees. Eventually, she gave up even the Bilva leaves and continued her penance without food or water.
Her body became extremely weak due to her intense austerities. Witnessing her unwavering devotion and determination, the gods and sages praised her dedication. Ultimately, her penance was successful, and Lord Shiva accepted her as his wife.
Because of her extraordinary penance, she came to be known as Maa Brahmacharini. Her story teaches devotees the importance of patience, determination, devotion and commitment while pursuing their goals.
