According to Hindu scriptures, the origin of Bhai Dooj is connected to Lord Yama (the God of Death) and his sister Yamuna. It is believed that on this day, Yama visited his sister’s home after a long time. In return, Yama blessed her and declared that any brother who visits his sister on this day shall be freed from the fear of untimely death. Hence, Bhai Dooj is also called Yama Dwitiya in many parts of India.
