Adhika Purnima Vrat 2026 (May 31): A Sacred Full Moon Fast for Spiritual Purification and Divine Blessings

Adhika Purnima Vrat is one of the most sacred and spiritually rewarding fasts in Hinduism. It is observed on the Full Moon (Purnima) of the Shukla Paksha every month, but when it occurs during Adhika Maas, its significance increases manifold. In 2026, this auspicious vrat will be observed on May 31 (Sunday).
According to the Hindu calendar, the Purnima Tithi begins on May 30, 2026, at 11:57 AM and ends on May 31, 2026, at 2:14 PM. The moonrise on this day is around 6:40 PM, which marks the important time for offering Arghya to the Moon God.
The Full Moon day is considered highly auspicious for the worship of Lord Vishnu and Chandra Dev (Moon God). On this day, the moon appears in its complete form, symbolizing peace, calmness, and spiritual clarity.
Adhika Maas, also known as Purushottama Maas, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Any spiritual practice performed during this period yields multiplied benefits. Therefore, observing Purnima Vrat during this month is believed to bring immense spiritual merit.
The Bhavishya Purana mentions the significance of Battisi Purnima Vrat (Dvatrimshi Vrat), which is associated with attaining happiness, prosperity, and progeny.
The vrat begins with an early morning ritual bath. If possible, devotees should take a dip in a holy river; otherwise, bathing at home with a few drops of Gangajal is considered equally beneficial. After bathing, devotees take a vow (Sankalpa) to observe the fast.
The ritual begins with worshipping Lord Ganesha followed by Kalash Sthapana. Then, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped using Shodashopachara Puja. In many traditions, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Chandra Dev are also worshipped.
Devotees observe fasting throughout the day and engage in chanting, meditation, and devotional singing. Chanting mantras like “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” and “Om Namah Shivaya” is considered highly auspicious.
In the evening, offering Arghya to the Moon God is an important ritual. Listening to or reciting the Purnima Vrat Katha and organizing Satyanarayana Katha is also considered highly beneficial.
Charity plays a crucial role on this day. Donating food, clothes, ghee, sesame seeds, and money is believed to bring immense spiritual merit.
During the fast, devotees consume fruits, milk, and simple satvik food. Many also observe a water-only fast. Grains, spices, and tamasic food items are avoided.
The fast is usually broken after offering Arghya to the Moon in the evening. Before breaking the fast, feeding Brahmins and giving donations enhances the benefits of the vrat.
Purnima Vrat teaches the importance of purity, discipline, and devotion. It helps cleanse the mind and soul while bringing inner peace and spiritual growth.
In today’s fast-paced life, this vrat offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with spiritual values.
In, Adhika Purnima Vrat is not just a ritual but a powerful spiritual practice. Observing it with sincerity can bring peace, prosperity, and divine blessings into one’s life.
